For years, RiverStone Group of Moline has wanted to develop a sand-and-gravel pit on 77 acres close to Big Island. For years, residents -- with the help of a coalition of local, state and federal lawmakers and agencies -- have blocked the move.

It may not stay that way for long.

Mayor Graham Richard is right in calling on the legislature to permit Fort Wayne residents to vote on allowing slot-like machines in Fort Wayne's off-track betting parlor.
