Ho-Chunk Won't Try Second Time If Casino Referendum Here Fails - 2004-02-10
If Dane County residents vote next week against converting the DeJope bingo hall into a casino, Ho-Chunk Nation officials say they will not return for a second attempt. "We're not really ready to go where we're not wanted," Rebecca Weise, attorney general for the Ho-Chunk Nation, told on Monday.
Ho-Chunk Nation President George Lewis concurred. "If we're not wanted there, we'll do what we have to elsewhere," he said. That was surprising news to members of No Dane Casino, which has contended that Ho-Chunk will launch another campaign to establish a casino at DeJope if the referendum fails.
