Casino Foes To Seek Law Against Lobbying For Tribal Recognition - 2004-02-10
Those who oppose casino gambling in Connecticut promised to seek federal legislation that would check the role of lobbying in Washington by Indian tribes seeking recognition. At a forum in Danbury, state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and Jeff Benedict, president of the Connecticut Alliance Against Casino Expansion, organized a forum demanding a congressional investigation of the "influence of wealthy gaming interests" on tribal recognition.

U.S. Reps. Christopher Shays, R-4th District, Rob Simmons, R-2nd District, Nancy Johnson, R-5th District, and Rosa DeLauro, D-3rd District, asked the chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Government Reform to study the matter.

Memo Stirs Questions About West Warwick Casino - 2004-02-10
Those against a proposed West Warwick casino said
internal documents from the would-be developer prove that the planned casino would hurt the state's two existing gambling sites. They also said the documents show such a casino would result in less revenue for Rhode Island.

But casino developer Harrah's Entertainment Inc., said the casino's critics are misinterpreting the studies.

Newport Grand Jai Alai has released documents including a January 2002 study from Harrah's, which is working with the Narragansett Indian Tribe to build a proposed $450 million casino and resort.
