U-46 worries about casino's tax effort - 2004-02-10
Elgin leaders will fight an attempt by the Grand Victoria Casino to pay them significantly less in property taxes than they do presently, officials said on Monday.
If the casino gets its way, it could mean Elgin would receive $600,000 less a year from the riverboat than anticipated, said City Manager David Dorgan, who called that "significant" at a time when the city's budget is barely balanced.
"They want a tax reduction. We don't want it because it costs us money," Dorgan said.
