Secret report says casino would hurt Lincoln Park, Newport - 2004-02-10
Stopping just short of naming each other liars, the players on two sides of the debate over a planned Narragansett Indian casino in West Warwick are accusing each other of manipulating statistics and making deceptive claims.

Representatives of Newport Grand and Lincoln Park say that public statements made by Narragansett Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas and Harrah's Entertainment Inc. executive Jan Jones to the effect that the state's two slot machine parlors would not be threatened by competition from a resort-style casino are "directly contradicted" by an incomplete confidential Harrah's document they distributed to The Call and other news organizations
on Monday.

Rose: All bets off for reinstatement - 2004-02-10
If it meant getting back in baseball, Pete Rose said he would meet all conditions.

He would never again visit a casino, if that's what commissioner Bud Selig stipulated. He never again would bet on football or basketball. Baseball? For the past 14 1/2 years, Rose has been living with the consequences of betting on baseball, specifically the Cincinnati Reds team he was managing in 1987.

But here's the kicker: Rose was asked if he would surrender his favorite hobby. Yes, Rose said, he never again would be seen at a horse track, never again hang out in a private room with his buddies at Red & Jerry's, never again wager on a sure-thing pony - if it meant getting back into baseball.
