Adam Gilchrist arrived at Crown Casino last night thinking Ricky Ponting might effect the first clean sweep in the short history of the Allan Border Medal.
It was not that Gilchrist was underestimating his chances, for he thought his domestic one-day Series, which included 172 against Zimbabwe last month - the second-highest one-day international score by an Australian - might have brought him close to the top of the poll.
It was just that Australia's wicketkeeper-batsman, who played 33 matches and made 1463 runs at a strike rate of 105.16 in the past year to confirm his standing as the world's most explosive one-day batsman, could not really remember his contributions.
