Casino Cuts Come During Campaign - 2004-02-12
After 10 days as a security officer at Ho-Chunk Casino in Lake Delton, Lon Jury was laid off Friday, together with 56 other Ho-Chunk workers. The layoffs come as the Ho-Chunk Nation is expected to spend over $1 million to win votes in Tuesday's referendum to expand gambling at Madison's DeJope Bingo Hall.
"It's a really lousy way to cut money," Jury said. Lisa Pugh, spokeswoman for the Ho-Chunk sponsored Coalition for the Fair Indian Gaming and Revenue Sharing Agreements, said the layoffs were the result of a winter season lull.
