Board member: Use casino cash, pay tax for poor - 2004-02-12
As he did three years ago, Lake County Commissioner Rudy Clay is again asking local communities to use their casino tax revenues to pay poor senior citizens’ property taxes.
While property taxes are anticipated to increase across the board in the county due to a special reassessment, Clay, D-Gary, says picking up senior citizens’ property taxes should be the common practice.
“It doesn’t matter with the reassessment. They should have been doing it all the time,” Clay said Wednesday morning during an interview in his office. “The least we can do is take the casino money and pay the property taxes for them.”
