Calif. officials weigh gambling expansion - 2004-02-13
If California voters reject Gov. Arnold Schwarzennegger's $15 billion bond measure Proposition 57 next month, Supervisor Jim Venable said he will back legalizing gambling throughout the state to get out of debt.

Putting slot machines inside racetracks and card clubs could get the state out of debt quickly without raising taxes, Venable said during Tuesday's meeting of the Board of Supervisors. Such a measure would end the Indian monopoly on slot machines.

Counties are facing millions of dollars in lost revenue because of the state budget mess.

Opponents warn slots are likely for Timonium - 2004-02-13
Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan forecasts that slot machines will come to the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium if the General Assembly approves a bill legalizing slots.

"If we approve slots now, casinos will follow," Duncan said last week in Annapolis. "Slots will not provide enough money.

"Ocean City, Timonium: (slot machines) are coming."

Duncan spoke at a press conference held by a grassroots coalition of citizens, clergy and more than a dozen delegates and senators.
