Casino Gets Tax Cut From Fife City Council - 2004-02-02
The Fife City Council has lowered the city gambling tax on struggling Freddie's Club. After casino owner Chip Mudarri told the council he would have to close without the reduction, the council on Tuesday voted 6-0 to cut the tax from 8.5 percent of gross receipts on card playing to 4 percent.

The council acted after hearing Mudarri's request for a tax cut on Dec. 16 and after City Manager Bill Malinen met with him. Malinen then recommended the reduction to help Freddie's "to remain a viable business in Fife," he wrote in a memo to the council.

A 30-year-old single mother of two won $5.1 million in a $1 progressive slot machine at a casino on Saturday, one of Northern California's highest slot payoffs.

"At first, they told me it was $500,000 and I was excited about that, obviously," said the winner, who is not being identified publicly because she fears it will affect her job. "And then they told me it was $5 million, and it took me a few minutes for it to sink in. And a lot of shaking and crying and trying to breathe."
