Talk of new Conn. casino sparks traffic worry - 2004-02-25
The odds of getting a royal flush in a hand of poker are roughly 1 in 650,000. The likelihood of Connecticut's hosting another Indian casino appears
slightly better — a possibility that has many officials in the Nutmeg State cringing and local residents peering anxiously over the border.
The Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, based in Derby and Kent, Conn., received federal recognition Jan. 29 — giving it access to funding for education, health care and housing, and the power to operate a casino. The state has vowed to appeal the Bureau of Indian Affairs' decision, which touched off protests from Connecticut Gov. John G. Rowland on down.
