Romulus, Flint pitch for casino - 2004-02-06
Gaming proponents in this suburban Detroit community may be in for a struggle with another city over the location of a proposed Indian casino.

Romulus voters approved a plan in December that would permit a casino operated by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians to open in their city.

But the Flint City Council voted last week to ask voters to approve a similar measure when they go to the polls in the city's Aug. 3 primary.

"Our goal is to go to Romulus, but who knows what might happen?" Steve Mitchell, the tribe's spokesman, told the Detroit Free Press for a Friday story. "We're keeping all our options open."

Romulus, Flint pitch for casino as others object - 2004-02-06
Romulus and Flint could wind up in a tug-of-war over which city gets a proposed Indian casino. Flint's City Council voted collectively last week to put a measure on the city's Aug. 3 primary ballot seeking voter approval on a tribal casino.

Romulus voters approved a similar plan for their city in December in a campaign that was sponsored by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, which would own and operate the casino.

"Our goal is to go to Romulus, but who knows what might happen?" said Steve Mitchell, spokesman for the tribe. "We're keeping all our options open."
