Last Thursday's press shindig announcing the rebirth of the Moulin Rouge featured the standard amount of speechifying--from Mayor Oscar Goodman to Moulin Rouge Development Corp. CEO Dale Scott to City Councilman Lawrence Weekly. The two words most frequently used: history and future.

By all accounts, the brains behind the planned $200 million hotel-casino, which will include a Motown Cafe and cultural center and museum, are charting a course that balances a view to the future (check out the curvy, futuristic design) with more than a nod to the past.

Quick and Dirty: A notebook of news and politics - 2004-02-06
The most recent headlines in the casino business have dealt with the closure of Binion's Horseshoe on Fremont Street and the Castaways a few miles to the east. Experts have hypothesized about whether the demise--temporary or otherwise--of these venerable hotel-casinos is an indication of the future of downtown Las Vegas.

But down in the Strip resort corridor, these stories aren't top of mind among casino and tourism executives. What's worrying them is the growth of Indian gaming in California.
