County drops charges in casino robbery case - 2004-02-06
Prosecutors dismissed charges against a Gallatin County man suspected of trying to rob the Grand Slam Casino in Four Corners in November of 2002.

The decision comes after George Alan Cooper, 27, was sentenced in Yellowstone County towards the end of year to 60 years in prison for robbing six Billings businesses.

"The state estimates that the defendant will not be eligible for parole until 2026," Deputy County Attorney Todd Whipple wrote in court records filed Tuesday.

Casino gambling bill advances; debate continues - 2004-02-06
A legislative resolution that would permit casino gambling in Nebraska advanced to select file Thursday.

Many senators said the bill was essential as the least of the gambling evils facing the state.

The advancement concluded two days of debate on the resolution, which would add an amendment to the constitution. It was sponsored by Sen. DiAnna Schimek of Lincoln and passed 26-14.
