Besides the flashing lights, the ringing slots, and the payoffs for the winners, gaming enthusiasts are certain casinos have an additional enticing feature to offer states that allow them: Revenue.
For years, lawmakers and lobbyists who want to bring casinos and slot machines to the Bay State have argued that they will help boost sagging revenues and plug a gaping hole in the state budget.
Supporters estimated that a plan last year to allow three casinos and slot machines at the state's racetracks could yield up to $500 million for the state, at a time state leaders were struggling with a $3 billion hole in the budget.
