Study: Gambling a sure bet for Waterloo - 2004-02-07
One thousand, eight hundred jobs.

At least $151 million in new economic activity.

Almost $25 million in state and local taxes generated.

That's the potential economic impact of a Black Hawk County riverboat casino, according to a study commissioned and published Thursday by the Iowa Association of Business and Industry.

Of the five counties that have passed referendums and one where a vote is pending, Black Hawk County's proposed facility would by far have the greatest impact. Worth County's proposed complex could generate 800 jobs and $65 million in economic activity.

Boyd Gaming to rename casino Sam's Town - 2004-02-07
Boyd Gaming, which is purchasing Harrah's Shreveport casino, plans to rename it Sam's Town and pattern it partially on a casino complex in Las Vegas.

Boyd consented last month to buy Harrah's casino and hotel on the Shreveport riverfront for $190 million. It hopes to take ownership this spring or summer.

Harrah's sold its Shreveport casino because it is buying Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City. Horseshoe is the top money making casino in Louisiana.
