Indian Casino Not A Sure Bet - 2004-02-07
A number of members of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma are questioning the wisdom of building a new tribal casino complex in Colorado - despite their leadership's formal approval of the project.
In late December, supporters of the proposed casino and adjacent cultural center, dubbed the
"Homecoming Project," pitched the idea as a way of
making reparations to descendants of Indians slain during the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre in eastern Colorado. Then, in January, a tribal leader issued a statement endorsing the project but distancing it from the Sand Creek connection, saying instead that the casino would be a means to settle a tribal claim to 27 million acres of land in the state.
