Opelousas Presses For A Share Of Casino Cash - 2004-02-09
This city wants a much larger share of the expected
revenue from the new Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino. Presently, 58 percent of 4 percent of Evangeline Downs' earnings goes to the parish council. "They were the governing authority at that time. Now we are the governing authority," said Mayor Anna Simmons, referring to Opelousas' annexation of Evangeline Downs.

"We remain the governing authority, not the city," Parish President Don Menard countered. "The racetrack was sold to the public with the understanding that the parish would get the funding to help us better our roads."

CVB Calls Casino Talk 'Irresponsible' - 2004-02-09
The Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau is blasting a push for reconsideration of the Buffalo Convention Center as a future casino location. Citing a Buffalo News story this week detailing a bipartisan effort by federal, state and local elected officials to bring the convention center back to the table, CVB President and CEO Richard Geiger said the push was "irresponsible."

"Our board has been unanimous in its opposition to the suggestion that this community get out of the convention and tourism business and replace it with a casino," Geiger said.
