Tribal library opens in Pauma - 2004-03-01 What was once a messy bookshelf in a classroom is now a 2,400-square-foot library with 4,000 volumes and plenty of potential.
Located just east of Casino Pauma at 1010 Pauma Reservation Road, the library is becoming a gathering point for Pauma Indian Reservation residents and visitors who come to the casino or take classes at the Palomar College Learning Center next to the library. Casino foes blast BIA - 2004-03-01 It's name is the Connecticut Alliance Against Casino Expansion, but president Jeff Benedict Monday night focused on the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
"This is not a bureau making law," Benedict told a crowd of about 120 people at Woodstock Academy Monday night. "This agency decides whether groups of people should be declared sovereign nations, and lobbyists should not be a part of it."
Benedict and state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, holding an "informational meeting" similar to ones held earlier this year in western Connecticut, tried to draw distinctions between their opposition to added gaming facilities in the state and tribal efforts at recognition.
