Is Galena better city than KCK for casino? - 2004-03-11 A destination casino in southeast Kansas has the potential to generate more revenue than one in the Kansas City area, according to a feasibility study conducted for the state lottery.
Kansas Lottery director Ed Van Petten, who presented the study's findings Thursday to a Senate committee, said the research also shows that 55 percent of Kansans favor expanded gambling, while 38 percent oppose it.
Among the more surprising findings of the survey, Van Petten said, is that the tiny southeast Kansas town of Galena would be one of the most attractive casino sites in the state. Read the full story at Wichita Eagle |

Problem-gambling program is in flux - 2004-03-11 Regulators charged with monitoring Arizona's $1 billion Indian gambling industry have expanded their scrutiny beyond casino operations to a casino byproduct: problem gambling.
The state Department of Gaming last fall took over administration of the state's problem-gambling treatment and education efforts from the state Lottery.
Armed with more money to fight problem gambling thanks to Proposition 202, which allocates a portion of tribes' gambling revenues to the issue, department officials hope to treat more addicts and prevent more suffering, not just by casino players. Read the full story at AZ Central.com |
