Tribe puts its casino plans up for review - 2004-03-12
A landless Native American tribe hoping to open a casino-resort just west of Rohnert Park presented its plans for intense scrutiny this week, voluntarily submitting to a national review of the project's environmental impacts.

About 200 people crowded a Wednesday night meeting that started the review process, with some 60 of them giving impassioned voice to their concerns and to their support.

The tribal members assured those present that they will be good stewards of the land.

Study suggests southeast Kansas casino is state's best bet - 2004-03-12
A destination casino in southeast Kansas has the potential to generate more revenue than one in the Kansas City area, according to a feasibility study conducted for the state lottery.

Kansas Lottery director Ed Van Petten, who presented the study's findings Thursday to a Senate committee, said the research also shows 55 percent of Kansans favor expanded gambling, while 38 percent oppose it.

Among the more surprising findings of the survey, Van Petten said, is that the tiny southeast Kansas town of Galena would be one of the most attractive casino sites in the state.
