Tribes looking beyond reservation crossings for casinos - 2004-03-14
The Tule River Indian tribe runs a booming casino with 1,500 slot machines on its reservation in California's Central Valley.
But the casino is up a winding road miles from the region's main route, provoking tribal members to contemplate abandoning their casino and constructing a new one at a more profitable location, alongside Highway 190.

The tribe's problem is that the location it wants for a casino isn't part of its reservation. It can't establish a casino there unless it's granted a rare exception under federal legislation.

Shiprock Convention Center and maybe a casino proposed - 2004-03-14
A Shiprock convention center and hotel — including a potential casino — has been proposed by Floyd Kurley, a Navajo, and Tom Vigil, a Jicarilla Apache, proprietors of K-V Enterprises.

The Navajo Nation Gaming Ordinance does not limit gaming to the tribe’s satellite To’hajiilee reservation close to Albuquerque, however, a resolution supporting it does make the limitation. The Navajo Nation has already signed a gaming agreement with the state of New Mexico. It has no existing casinos.
