A Sure Bet: Des Plaines Wins In Losing Casino - 2004-03-17
Rosemont is not the only big winner in the much publicized casino derby.

The other big winner ,possibly the biggest, is Des Plaines.

As hard as that is to believe, the positive prospects of a casino in Des Plaines would have been questionable. There's no doubt that the city would have reaped millions of dollars every year from a special "host community" tax. And if the owners of a Des Plaines casino had moved ahead on developing the River Road-Devon Avenue corner with a hotel, restaurants and retail space, sizable amounts of sales and property taxes would have been generated.

USM may add casino courses - 2004-03-17
The University of Southern Mississippi will start teaching casino and resort management courses next fall if the College Board authorizes a new degree program Thursday.

The board, which asked for proposals in December, is expected to authorize the program despite a state law that prohibits state-supported institutions from teaching gaming courses.

"What we want to do is train people to be managers in an industry," said Harold Doty, dean of the College of Business and Economic Development. "We are not interested in teaching any gaming stuff."
