Sweeny implements prohibition on 8-liners - 2004-03-17
A six-month prohibition on new eight-liner machines in the city won’t maintain current machines from operating for at least that long.

“I understand that you don’t want to get a big gambling operation going in town, but they’re not messing with us right now,” commented Diana Johnson, a manager at Milt’s Mini-Mart, where about seven frequent customers and the occasional player use eight-liners.

“That’s virtually having a casino in the middle of the city,” Stroud stated.

Personal bankruptcies greater close to casinos, research shows - 2004-03-17
A recent study by Creighton University titled "The Impact of Casino Gambling on Bankruptcy Rates" indicated the rate of personal bankruptcies in counties with casinos was more than double that of comparable counties.

The study examined the effects of the national proliferation of casinos through the 1990s. The authors compared federal court bankruptcy from 1990 and '99, the New York Daily Star Online reports.
