Prairie Meadows awaits decision on expanded gambling - 2004-03-22
A development of gambling in Iowa could mean the addition of Las Vegas-like facilities at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino, officials say.

The expansion of gambling, under consideration by lawmakers this year, could clear the path for not only more riverboat casinos but the addition of table games at land-based casinos, such as Prairie Meadows.

Jack Bishop, vice chairman of the Racing Association of Central Iowa, the group that oversees the Altoona racetrack, said an expansion of the casino may include room for table games, an upscale restaurant, a hotel and conference center.

Fond du Lac's casino expansion comes at gaming crossroads - 2004-03-22
The federal Indian Regulatory Gaming Act of 1988 that was the basis for a tribal casino industry has a simple rationale: to fund the evolution of a third world culture into a 21st century economic player.

That evolution is playing out in striking fashion at the Fond du Lac Reservation since 1991, when it scraped together $200,000 to renovate a factory building into a bare bones casino.

Along the way the tribe has become Carlton County’s largest employer with more than 1,000 workers.
