Preparing to hear the ka-ching of slots - 2004-03-29
Rich Piekutowski can see it now - a veritable jackpot from the projected slot machine casino at the Downs at Pocono.

Penn National Gaming Inc., which controls the Downs at Pocono, has prepared to establish a 181,623-square-foot casino with up to 3,000 slot machines at the track. The township planning commission has supported the plan, so all that's left is for the state General Assembly to make the gaming legal.

The World Trade Organization, in its first ruling on an Internet-related conflict, has ignited a political, cultural and legal tinderbox by deciding that the United States policy prohibiting online gambling breaches international trade legislation.

Millions of Americans now gamble online, using credit cards or online payment services to bet on sports contests or at games such as poker, blackjack and roulette. Online casinos are normally based in Costa Rica or the Caribbean, but also in Britain.
