Delayed by tragedy, Trop's expansion set for fall debut - 2004-03-03
Tropicana Casino and Resort's development project in Atlantic City, the scene of a deadly garage collapse last October, is scheduled to open by the fall.

The casino's parent company, Arizona-based Aztar, recently announced all facets of the project -- including a hotel expansion and a Latin-themed retail/entertainment complex dubbed "The Quarter" -- will open in September. The project, a key part of Atlantic City's $1.8 billion building boom, was originally supposed to open this month.

Many Big Islanders opposed to RiverStone quarry - 2004-03-03
Residents of Big Island say they would not be bothered by Jumer’s Casino Rock Island expanding into their community.

But they will not accept RiverStone Group Inc. mining sand and gravel from their island.

More than 150 people, mostly residents of Big Island — a rural Rock Island County area located between Rock Island and Milan, Ill. — converged Wednesday night on Rock Island City Hall to hear testimony on RiverStone’s desire to annex land on Big Island and obtain special-use permits that would allow the company to proceed with sand and gravel mining operations on the island.
