State could receive $1 billion in agreement with tribes - 2004-03-31
A group of California tribes and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger are close to an agreement on a deal that could deliver $1 billion or more to the state right away while raising the lid on slot machines for Indian casinos.

In exchange, tribes could have unrestricted slot machines as long as they were open to paying graduated fees of up to $25,000 annually per machine, sources stated. Their existing 20-year tribal-state gambling agreements, or compacts, would be lengthened.
