Be cautious of casinos' social expenses - 2004-04-01
I refer to the report, 'A S'pore casino could generate up to 1,000 jobs' (BT, March 31). I don't doubt that a casino would produce considerable economic activity, tax revenue, employment and other spin-offs.

The Economist once published the obituary of Leonard Tose, a successful entrepreneur who created a trucking business. A compulsive gambler, he is calculated to have lost US$40 million playing blackjack.

Las Vegas operators sell St. Louis casino offer - 2004-04-01
Three Las Vegas-based casino operators seeking to construct a new St. Louis-area casino are in Missouri today, taking state officials on tours of their planned casino sites.

In spite of having 77 percent of metropolitan St. Louis' adult population as well as 77 percent of the market's gaming positions (a number that equals the number of slot machines plus the number of table game seats or betting positions), Missouri casinos produce solely 67 percent of the market's gaming returns.
