Preserving track may be a gamble - 2004-04-05 Backers of preserving Bay Meadows Race Course as a horse racing venue may have to place their bets on putting hundreds of slot machines in the facility.
The measure could open the door to 3,000 slot machines at race tracks throughout California.
The measure stipulates that all 53 of the Indian gaming tribes must either pay to the state 25 percent of their machine gaming returns or lose their monopoly on casino gambling, in which case slot machines would be legalized at race tracks in California.
